Drawing 2

This course reinforces and advances skills established in Drawing I. Direct observational drawing, perspective, proportion and composition are emphasized. The use of black and white media is refined and expanded along with the introduction of colored media. The development of content within the drawing process is introduced.

Charcoal Still Life on Toned Paper

This project reacquaints students with observational drawing using black and white charcoal on toned paper. Objectives include: establishing a balanced composition, capturing proportions, conveying value structures and surface qualities across an array of forms. Technical mastery of materials is emphasized; rather than mixing the charcoals, students are instructed to use the tone of the paper to represent middle-values.

2-Point Perspective Drawing

Students create a graphite drawing which evokes a sense of wonder, curiosity, or surprise using 2-point perspective and imaginative imagery. Students gather source images as visual references and develop their compositions through thumbnail sketches. They are challenged to create a convincing sense of spatial depth, scaling the drawing up to a large piece of paper. A successful drawing incorporates a wide range of values, creative imagery, and a variety of surfaces/textures.

Animal Hybrid Drawing

Students gather source imagery to develop drafts of fantastical creatures using micron pens. This project helps students develop a vocabulary of mark-making to create visual texture and the illusion of three-dimensionality. It also engages their imagination and requires creative problem-solving as they consider transitions between anatomical components. Students present a written narrative to accompany their drawing during critique.

color still life Drawings

This project introduces students to drawing in color from direct observation using chalk pastels and toned textured paper. Students learn to layer pastels to achieve desired hues and values, using mark making techniques to convey surface qualities. Conveying a clear light source is emphasized.

Abstract Pastel Drawing

This project introduces students to alternative methods of drawing by incorporating abstraction and establishing visual parameters. Students draw stools from a variety of angles and use simplification to create unique interpretations of a common form. By altering scale, direction, and color, students create interesting compositions through intuition and experimentation. Students are encouraged to develop a color palette, use layering to create an interesting sense of space, incorporate a wide range of values and develop their own unique drawing style.

Trompe l’oeil Pastel Drawing

For their final project, students are introduced to tromp l’oeil drawing from historical and contemporary examples. Students create an arrangement of objects on a board which are personally meaningful, considering compositional arrangement. They learn to set up directional lighting and create their drawing to scale on sanded pastel paper. Through layering, students render value structures, colors, and surface qualities to create a convincing sense of three-dimensionality.
